Comments about POWERMATIC 6" Jointer w/ QS Knives, Model 54A :

As a professional cabinet and furniture maker, I have to have quality tools to aid in my work. After a lot of trying different jointers, this one made the cut. No, it is not cheap, you get what you pay for and I'm very happy with my purchase. Next to the table saw, it is the most important tool in my shop. One great machine!

Comments about POWERMATIC 6" Jointer w/ QS Knives, Model 54A :

I am an avid woodworker. It is my hobby and I sometimes get paid. I work hard for my money and when I spend it I want a quality product. I'm not so sure that Powermatic is still making what they used to. This is my first jointer. Assembly took some time and help. This is a heavy machine. The tables were not coplanar out of the box. Not even close. One of the store owners said he could ship it back but I should try adjusting them first. He let me borrow a very expensive four foot straight edge (essential in my opinion) and told me what to do. It was not that hard, 2 hours later using my feeler gauges I got it all dialed in, by adjusting the gibs. The tables have a few .003 dips in them, but are straight so that should not be a problem. However the fence had a twist in it that produced out of square cuts. If I pushed a square against it at the cutter head it was even, but a .009 gap at the top of the square at the end of the in feed side and a .007 gap at the bottom of the square at the out feed side seemed to be the problem. I called Powermatic. They are not helpful. I will not buy another product from them. I told the store owner about the fence when I returned the straight edge. He said bring it. The guys at the store took one look at it went in back and got the fence off the classroom machine and told me to take it home. This second fence is much better, just a thousandth or two off overall. However it will not stay square. The plastic handle that is supposed to lock it will probably snap at some point so I don't push that hard on it and as a result the fence is never square. Even if I do snug it down, it is out of square again as soon as I change the width. I'd like to find the person that named the quick set knives and have them show me how they quickly set them. After about my sixth change using a dial indicator I can change them in half an hour, set them up within two thousands of each other and then get cuts as fine as my highly tuned smooth plane. A half hour is not quick, it is do-able and I did get a lot faster, but they are not self indexing knives or even close. The machine does have plenty of power for my needs, long smooth beds and very adequate dust collection. The power switch is hard to get to, for both off and on. The machine does come to life with a smooth quiet hum. If it keeps doing this for the next few years I will be happy. As you can see it was quite a lot of set up and initial trouble. Is this worth the cost? I would not go through this again if I knew what I was getting into, however I will keep using this machine as long as it runs, now that it is tuned the wood comes off it flat and straight and I guess that is what I really should focus on .

Comments about POWERMATIC 6" Jointer w/ QS Knives, Model 54A :

I have a small shop at my home. I wanted a "real" jointer for years after fighting a benchtop model. This machine is all I expected it to be - quite, stable, powerful - in a word perfect. If you are saving for a real tool, wait until you can buy Powermatic. You will not be disappointed.
