Product Information:

These oil-based Gel Topcoats and Stains are quite possibly the easiest of all finishes to use and achieve a "hand-rubbed" look without all the work. Application is easy with a foam brush or lint free cloth. The heavy bodied gel formulation permits the product to flow out evenly (no drips or runs) preventing uneven penetration for consistent color control. Combined with no sanding (your choice to sand or not) between coats and a quick “re-coat” time, you’ll be finished sooner with less effort and better results than ever before.

  • This is the stain that has the most "finishing feel" of all General Finishes' products
  • Woodworkers love the lustrous finish that shows up
  • Heavy-bodied, and so does not penetrate as deeply into the wood as liquid oil-base stains do
  • Can help you get a more even appearance on difficult woods such as aspen or pine
  • Easy-to-use stains simply wipe on with a cloth or applied with a foam brush (no spills or splashes)

  • Need help refinishing old cabinets or cabinets that are in perfectly good condition? Tired of that golden oak color
and would like a more modern, up to date look? General Finishes Gel Stains open up a world of easy-to-attain
possibilities for revitalizing wood furniture, redecorating your home by changing the color of wood cabinets,
furniture and floors, and achieving an excellent first-time finish. These oil-based products are super easy to
use and produce a ‘hand-rubbed’ look with little effort. Just apply with a foam brush or lint-free cloth
and wipe off – heavy-bodies gel offers even flow and consistent color control. Recoat time is quick, and
sanding between coats is your choice. Use the gel topcoat for extra durability and protection.

Many homes built in the 1980’s used stock golden oak cabinets in the kitchen and the bathroom.
These cabinets were made with excellent quality construction and have proved very durable over
the years in your home. A couple decades have passed and you would like to bring your kitchen
or bathroom up to date with a different color combination for your cabinets or furniture.
General Finishes Gel Stain is the simple answer – and extremely affordable too!
  • Available in 11 colors, including the popular Java (shown here)
  • Multiple coats can be used for even more color combinations

Comments about General Finishes, Brown Mahogany Gel Stain, Quart :

I have NEVER written a review for anything i have purchased before- that should tell you how amazing this product is- 1978 UGLY oak cabinets, worn out but still structuraly sound- i cleaned them really good, lightly sanded with 180 (and i mean lightly) wipped them down with mineral spirits, applied the stain with a brush and then rubbed off excess with an appliction pad- absolutly beautiful- i just can't figure out how in the world i will get up to the vaulted ceiling to use this product on our ceiling beams- we are keeping the wood now, not painting it white like everyone else does and I simply couldn't be happier- i am a beginner female DIY'r and am simply having a BLAST!

Comments about General Finishes, Brown Mahogany Gel Stain, Quart :

I wanted a rich brown with red undertones when I refinished my ugly 80's golden oak cabinets so I layered the Brown Mahogany with the Georgian Cherry and got an incredible finish. If it doesn't get heavy use I don't think you'd need to put on a clear coat. If you do need the extra protection and want to keep the satin look, avoid the General Finishes wipe on satin as it will wind up too glossy, go with a water-based poly on top. If you like the shine, stick with the General finishes product since it is easy to use and leaves a nice professional finish.
