Festool Rotex RO90 Multi-Purpose Sander
I had read a lot about rotex sanders. Lots of praise. I did not see it for me though as only a avid "hobby" woodworker. I had a ETS 150/3 for those large flat surfaces that I needed really well finished. The rotex seemed too focused on its aggressive abilities and I perceived its random orbit abilities redundant with the 150. Well, I have to admit I was wrong. I was undertaking some refinishing projects and thought the rotex would be helpful for that work. It was/is, no doubt excellent for that use; but what I have been floored by is the downright finishing value of this unit for new wood projects. Not just the random orbit feature but the triangle attachment for detail work. It is my go to unit for anything but large flat surfaces. Amazing tool. Truly three sanders in one. In that context, one of the best price points of any festool; and I have many festools. The small size (90mm) is more a feature than a liability. As for balance problems that some seem to cite as a problem; I disagree. At first if you are used to a "palm" style sander, I can understand this critique. However, like Festool routers that have a bit of a different handle once you figure it out, it makes sense. You can't go wrong with this unit. I can honestly say this surprised me. I thought when I bought this it would be the first festool I would take back under the 30 day warranty. Boy was I wrong. Buy it. Enjoy it.

I have wanted this tool for the last six months. I am an avid woodworker that enjoys building furniture and rebuilding/refinishing antiques. I have owned the big brother Rotex 150 for about 5 years. It is easily my most used Festool in my collection. The 90 allows me to sand into corners; work on narrower areas, and handle aggressive sanding tasks. This tool has another use that I did not expect - with the special polymer abrasives and mild paste cleaning products - it cleans tile and grout like no other tool! Because of the small head, sanding rust off of garden tools and equipment is effortless. Well worth the price!
I am not one of those "Festool Fanatics", having typically purchased my tools at the local big-box home improvement stores. That said, if this sander is representative of their product line I plan to consider Festool for future tool purchases.
This sander might seem small, with just a 90mm (3 1/2") pad, but it's ridiculously powerful. Put 60 or 80 grit on it, and hope that you have a good-sized dust collector, because it chews through wood like a beaver. At the same time, the finish is oh-so-fine with the higher grit abrasives. My only wish is that Woodcraft carried a wider variety of their abrasives because Festool offers a *lot* more than are sold here.
The only reason for 4 stars at this point in time is that I've not owned it long enough to speak for its durability. If it's still doing its job a few years later, it deserves 5 stars.
