Soft Maple (Acer rubrum) is about 25% softer than hard maples. The sapwood is indistinguishable from the heartwood, which is creamy white in color with a close, straight grain. The wood is good for steam bending. It works will with hand machine tools and can be stained and polished to an excellent finish.
