This is a high quality router, but has practical design flaws. The unit is sold with a sub-base that has a center hole that is too small for its own factory supplied collets. The collet will hit the base when retracted. Larger bits (with a circumference larger than 1.25") can get dangerously caught between the sub-base and the collet rotating edge. Secondly, the control switch is poorly located on the upper motor housing. I would recommend you choose carefully depending on your intended use. You will be disappointed if you are using bits with any portion of the contour larger than 1.25" Diameter. You must purchase PCbl 2.5" sub-base part number 42188 to get around the sub-base issue as an option.

My years old 690 (6902 type 5), is rated at 10 amps and has a maximum (unloaded) speed of 23.00 R.P.M., while my new 690LR (6902 Type 8) is rated for 11 amps at 27,500 R.P.M.. The two, while quite similar, do have noteworthy differences: The On/Off Toggle Switch has been replaced with a rubber covered Rocker Switch; The Air Intake vents and diameter have been changed (a bit narrower and smaller respectively); The collets appear almost the same, except that the chamfering (edge breaking) on the bit end is almost nonexistent; The old #1000 Fixed Base has hard plastic handles, round in cross section, while the new #1000 Fixed Base has egg shaped, softer textured handles. The R.P.M. difference inclines me to believe I should use the slower one for ½" diameter shanked, and/or larger bits and the faster one for ¼" shanked and/or smaller diameter ones. As to reliability? It's a Porter Cable, how could it not be?

Wide set handles insure good downward pressure over workpiece. Slight modification was needed to base plate in order to use a 1/2" round over bit. Well worth the money.

I already have a 690 with a plunge base, yet they are so affordable having a back-up is possible. This unit is very economical for CNC router tables too.
