Mini X Miller Dowel Kit
I've seen this at Woodcraft, picked it up even and inspected but never purchased. Then I had a delicate project to glue up but wasn't confident the glue alone would be as structurally sound as it needed to be. I first thought about using standard dowel pins but was concerned with keeping the hole straight as I drilled with a cordless drill. When I rememberd these dowel pins, off I headed to Woodcraft to purchase.
As with every new little gadget, I am not a believer but willing to try. These are absolutely the easiest things to use! I drilled the holes about half-trigger speed and found that once the bit was down about half way, it aligned itself for a straight hole. When I removed the bit, I made sure the hole didn't have any debris in it before gluing the dowel and inserting. When inserting, you will need a hammer as the dowel gets tighter as you near getting it fully seated.
I do recommend practicing with a few test runs just to get the feel for it. There's a mark on the drill bit so you will know how deep to drill. This will allow you to get the dowel fully seated with just a slight bump remaining to sand down.
Another side benefit is that there is a selection of dowels for the most common species. I used walnut dowels with my oak project to give it a little contrast.
