Not an effective alternative
WoodRiver DV2 Self-Centering Drilling Vise
There is far too much play in the bit guide to drill consistently straight holes with this device.
I returned this product to the store and ended up purchasing a drill press.

Conceptually, a great idea. The execution is lacking. Like the previous commenter said, there is FAR too much wiggle on the drill bit, to guarentee a CENTER TOP to CENTER BOTTOM hole.. I have tried everything I can, and still have yet to drill a perfect hole. I have blown out several expensive blanks, and a LOT of cheap ones, in the process of trying. My best efforts came when I left the top adapter LOOSE, and brought the SQUARE end of the blank ALL The way to the top. As the drill bit spins down, it tightens the adapter against the blank. Then, do your best to keep the drill CENTERED all the way through. The problem wiht this method, is as you back the bit in and out, you open up the hole. Your best bet, would be to take the money you planned on spending, and just go ahead and get a real drill press. In the long run, you will get more use from the drill press.
Effective for my needs
I purchased this item because I do not have the space for an infrequently used drill press. It is not the best or most accurate solution, however if used slowly and with frequent relief of the drilled hole, it seems to work as advertised. The trick I have found with this item is to carefully mark your center hole and make sure that the guide is aligned, and tight. I stand with my eyes looking directly down the drill like sighting a gun ... I use mild pressure and I extract the drill bit every inch or so. I have found that for the money and the limited space I have, this is a pretty decent alternative. Experiment with cheaper material until you get the hang of the technique required to use this item.

Finally, Someone figured out a way to drill pen blanks without a drill press. Using a lathe requires a chuck. Most entry level bench top drill presses don't have enough throw to drill pen blanks. Comes with 4 bushing that seem to be the ones most used.
Don't buy this product. The drill guides do not provide enough guidance. You will not drill down the center as there is too much play in the drill bit. It is a good concept but a waste of my time and lost drill blanks.
