Product Information:

Slightly smaller and lighter than the No 4, this hand plane is well suited for smoothing smaller surfaces, or maneuvering around troublesome grain. Slightly longer than a block plane, the tote makes it more comfortable for extended use.

V3: Like our previous WoodRiver® Bench Hand Planes, our version 3 is based on the reliable Bedrock design and feature heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs and high carbon steel blades but we took the opportunity between manufacturing runs to do a critical review and make a few improvements. We’ve changed the shape of the rear tote and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. We’ve made numerous changes to the castings that result in better “feedback” and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with our own manufacturer, we’ve continued to make improvements in machining, finish and functionality which we feel have yielded hand planes that are meant to be used and offer an extraordinary value.
  • 2-1/4” W x 9-5/16”L with 1-3/4”W blade

  • Partners perfectly with the longer No. 5

  • Commonly known as a smoothing plane

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

This #3 V3 wood river smoothing plane arrived fast, perfect with no defects. I carefully unpacked, disassembled, inspected and cleaned. The tapped holes and threads are very precise and high quality. A drop of oil was added later when re-assembling. The large depth adjuster wheel is nice. Because the depth adjuster wheel diameter is large, I took extra care when loosening the frog screws. Note.. My individual frog screws were a little tight. I used a proper fitting (both width thickness) slotted screw driver. The sole is very smooth, flat and square to the cheeks well within machining specifications. The attractive rear tote and front knob are very comfortable for a #3 hand plane. The thick blade and unique chip breaker design are both very high quality. Finally performance of the plane iron as shipped worked very good on maple when set to take thin shavings.

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

1st one did not work: Too thin throat opening. Adjusted frog then blade would not come down enough. Returned this one. Waited 2 weeks for next one. 2nd one: After spending a long time hand-sharpening the blade, found out that the blade would not go below the sole. This was because the chipbreaker was stopping the blade adjustment. Wasted gas and lots of time. Returned second one for a refund.

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

This is the 5th WoodRiver plane I have purchased (second No3) and will probably be the last, only because they are so good that they will last a lifetime. Like all the WoodRiver planes they are exceptional value for money and prove that chineese made dosn't mean poor quality. After a small amount of tunning and honning, it produced ultra thin shavings on the hardest of timbers effortlessly. The blade is a nice heavy-weight thickness and takes and holds an edge fantasticly. I am someone that is fanatical about sharpness, and this blade really impresses. The chip breaker and cap are again nice and heavy and make for a great combination, producing no chatter or clogging, just smooth swish shavings. The only thing as good as how this plane performs, is how it looks and feels in your hand. Very well finished and a pleasure to hold. If you don't have a reason to use it, you'll find one just so you can.

This plane was a pleasant surprise. It tuned up with relative ease and it's quality compares with plane of twice the cost. I highly recommend the WoodRiver V3 hand planes to others and I would not hesitate to buy another in the future.

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

I'm a woodworker and I also deal in used and antique planes. As a woodworker I also have several planes I use for my business and have planes from other companies that built planes today. I was in need for a #3 (and only like to use bed rock type planes) and read about the new Woodcraft plane. I decided to buy one ( the price was a factor)and received my plane yesterday. I fettled the plane as I always do with a new plane I buy, and hone the blade to 30 degrees. I was amazed how well it was machined and built. The knob and tote are comfortable to hold, the blade and chipbreaker nice and thick. The bed rock system is very well put together. After spending about forty five minutes fettling the plane I put it to work. Again, I was amazed how well it planed. The sides to bottom are true (so the plane can be used on a shooting board) and the bottom itself I found it to be true also. After years of using bed rock planes (which I like very much) the maker of this plane has made some good improvements. #1 the blade system, #2 it's heavyer. #3 the machining is great. Bottom line I think it is a very good and will buy them again.

It took an hour to get the plane to exactly how I like them. I am returning it for one reason only; the handle is a bit too small for my hand. No problem. I will take it back and swap it out for a #4. This is an excellent value.

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

I was eager to get my hands on this plane after reading the positive reviews, and I was not disappointed. It's very well made and works beautifully. I must confess that I'm one of those people that grabs a plane out of the box and tries it out without sharpening, etc. I used it on several different test pieces of cherry, pine, oak, and it performed beautifully! It may not quite measure up to the "boutique" brands of planes, but for the money (and my limited skill set), it's as good as it gets. Next up is a joiner plane![...]

I was very impressed with the quality construction and solid feel of my new #3 Woodriver V3 plane. I have some fine "older" Stanley planes including a 606 Bedrock and the V3 is a great addition to my lineup. Like my great Stanley planes the V3 will be even better with the addition of a quality cutter. I would not hesitate purchasing another V3.

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

I bought this plane for all stages of planing bamboo strips for constructing split cane bamboo fly rods. I prefer a bench plane for this task as opposed to the more common block plane. Although planes from LN and Clifton are probably the best around, I find this plane to be the best deal going. Fit and machining is excellent and comparable to the more expensive planes. The blade is of suprisingly high quality and holds an edge well. I did resharpen it out of the box, but I do this to all my new blades. Packaging was sturdy and they used a light oil which was easy to clean off. All in all, a great plane that you don't have to take out a second mortgage to own.

Comments about WoodRiver #3 Bench Hand Plane, V3 :

I was sure it would need major tune-up out of the box. The sole lapped true in a few strokes and the blade polished out quickly on finer water stone. The heft was good, but the Bedrock style Frog adjustment that I long wanted is more work than it is worth. I liked the hefty curling iron, but needed to lap the engagement surface a few strokes to keep clogs out. All in all just minor issues. The only problem that comes back to bite is that the blade and iron sandwich do not like to stay square in the plane. Torque screw driver?
