Pen Inlay Kit - Stars and Stripes Flag - for Navigator and Sedona
I love the looks of this pen. I was a little nervous, as I am an absolute amateur turner. It assembles well. I used epoxy, not CA, to assemble the parts. I did end up cracking the blue barrel when pressing in one star. I was able to put the crack under the clip, so you cannot see it. The epoxy meant it was very strong anyway.
I recommend NOT using a gouge or skew to begin, but a semi-coarse sandpaper. I did use my very sharp carbide tipped "gouge" to "rough turn" the blanks after sanding "rough smooth" (You will understand what I mean if you build one).
When you are sanding the barrels, you CAN get a bleed of the red into the white maple. Light sanding seems to stop this.
I finished the barrels with semi-gloss polyurethane. After fully drying, the pen handles without any tackiness.
