Product Information:

Provides a pivot point to rest your material while you advance the workpiece into the spinning router bit. An integral shield keeps dust from flying up into your face while the laminated birch plywood and phenolic frame channels chips to the combination dust port.

Routing curved workpieces on the router table can be a difficult task given the interference with the fence while making inside cuts. A starting pin can help you gain control but does not offer protection from flying chips or assist with dust collection. Woodpeckers router table free hand bit guard provides a pivot point to rest your material while the frame with integral shield directs chips away into the dust port.

  • #7-9 - 12 Fixes for Router Roadblocks - This article opens on page 3 with problem #9, the Pinnacle Premium Freehand Bit Guard Solution. For most of us, the router already holds the workshop MVP award. It’s hard to imagine that the tool you’re trusting to shape edges, cut mortises, dovetails, identical parts, etc., is capable of doing that much more. Believe it or not, it probably can…and a little faster, safer, and more cleanly than you might expect.

Comments about Woodpeckers Router Table Free Hand Bit Guard :

I bought this for use with my Woodpecker router table insert. I primarily do pattern routing, so I have no need for a fence, which means I have no reliable attachment for dust collection. This unit is just the ticket for that and it works very well (see the video above). It is also meant to take the place of the guide pin, which is does just fine as long as your pattern doesn't have any deep curves. I use it for routing guitar bodies, and the guide gets in the way when I need to get into the cutaway areas of the bodies. Removing one of the attachment bolts allows me to rotate the guide enough to get into the deeper curves without having to completely remove the guard, so it's not really a problem. The other problem I had was that the height of the guard only allows pieces up to 1.5" thick to pass. Guitar bodies with a template attached are almost always thicker than this, so I used the wood base as a template and made a 3/4" riser from plywood to give me 2.25" clearance. There were even longer mounting bolts included (though not actually for this purpose).
