A good project
Classic American Twist Ballpoint Pen Kit - Bright Copper
I bought four of these kits at the local Woodcraft store before reading the above reviews. After reading them and being a newbie to this craft (six prior less-complicated projects), I was ready to go back to the store for a refund or something easier. But I decided to go ahead with one to see how it all worked out and the results were great. I followed the instructions and had no problems with the assembly. The twist mechanism is extremely smooth.
It was sort of tedious to part off that 1/8" of wood from the tube. On the next one, I'm going to try a blank cut 1/8" shorter than the tube. I also found the stackup of two blanks with the correct bushings is too long for my mandrel so they need to be turned individually. That's not a big deal to me and they're different diameters anyway.
I hope this initial success is more than just "beginner's luck". We'll see.

I would use this pen style again
The twist feature needs some attention, had to make twister egg shape so that it would work properly.
bad but fixable
I agree. We found that if you leave the clip off and tap the insert down a little more the pen works better but not great. We bought it in a multi pack and lost 4 sets until we could make it work.

Directions don"t help
This could be a great kit, however the directions don't match the kit. After making two pens I continued to run into problems during the assembly process. Until the directions are changed I would not recommend this kit to anyone.
If you are new, start with a simpler kit
This pen kit is good, but a bit complex for a newbie. The components are good. The instruction sheet needs some editing as it calls for (2) 5/8" X 5/8" X 2 3/8" blanks but the tubes included in the kit are 2" in length... I had to saw down my prepared blanks on the first kit after drilling them. Also, this kit requires parting off 1/8" of the wood from the tube on the top piece. This is a little tricky to do without marring the wood once you have sanded and finished the blank. If the tubes are cut to the correct length and one turns the blank to the EXACT width of the bushings, the pen goes together nicely and feels smooth and sturdy. NOTE: you can not fit both blanks on the Professional Mandrel and as such I have to turn the blanks individually. I definitely have to check into the availability of a longer mandrel shaft.
Problems with the threaded insert.
This pen kit makes a beautiful pen, but every pen I have assembled has a problem with the threaded insert for the clip. It doesn't fit tightly when pressed into the tube and has to be super glued or it will turn when tightening the clip bolt and in some cases it has come completely out. If this problem can be corrected, it will be a great kit.
