Comments about Nova DVR XP Lathe :

I think I'm in love… After looking, drooling over and reading almost every review available on the web, I finally pulled the trigger and got myself a Nova DVR XP lathe. I turned with it for the first time today and wow, what a wonderful machine! My situation creates a few difficulties and this lathe takes care of them in beautiful fashion. Because of my MS I have to sit while turning and even though my Jet 1014 was variable speed, repositioning and leaning around to change the belt was not always a quick and easy task. Because of this, I would do things at a less than perfect speed. The Nova DVR XP, with its direct drive spindle, speed variability is just a button push away. Now I can change the speed effortlessly to perfectly fit the task at hand. The other complicating thing for me is that I am left handed and from a seated position, turning the top of a pepper mill or the internal diameter of a bangle or ring was difficult for me and the only way I could reliably and somewhat safely do it was to reposition my Jet so it was sitting at an angle on my bench. The rotating headstock of Nova DVR XP makes this task so easy and safe… wow, what a huge difference! The spindle rotation is so incredibly smooth and the motor noise is almost nonexistent. The tailstock is very nice with a large diameter quill advance wheel that makes drilling very easy. The lock handles on the tool rest and tailstock are smooth and long which results in quick, easy and rigid lock downs. At 180 pounds, it will take a pretty out of balance chunk of wood to get it to dance around on my bench. Also, the 1.75 hp motor will more than keep things turning for me even when I get more aggressive than I should. I'm really happy with the new toy and I already wonder how I turned anything without it! Thanks for making such a wonderful machine!

Comments about Nova DVR XP Lathe :

This is the 3rd lathe I have owned. The other 2 performed as well, but were undersized. It was time for me to upgrade. Just like most of us craftsmen, I spent months researching and decided about 6 or 8 ago that the DVR XP was the one for me. It went on sale at Woodcraft last month... perfect timing. I absolutely love this lathe. Out of the box this lathe is everything as advertised and more. Powerful, smooth, quiet, intuitive, superbly designed and very durable. The speed control is simple, vast and gracefully smooth. The tailstock and the tool rest are very strong. The "anti catch" and out of balance compensation features are outstanding safety features that have dramatically reduced the dangers and anxiety of turning awkward and unbalanced green blanks, logs and any other odd tree parts we love to challenge ourselves with. The supplied manual does not include instructions to run this lathe at 220v. A 5minute internet search provided me necessary info switching device required. Out of the box the tailstock was out of alignment approx 2 or 3mm. I followed the manuals procedure to correct this and 10 mins later its perfect. 1 word of caution, I once inadvertantly and carelessly leaned my left elbow on the control pad while turning close to the headstock. I wasnt prepared for dramatic speed increase. It was total "operator error". Thank you and great job Teknatool. I couldnt be more satisfied.

Comments about Nova DVR XP Lathe :

My spindle had a wobble and the display would go out intermittently. Working with customer service was difficult. I sent it back to the St. Petersburg office for $125 UPS. It took 5 weeks for them to send a new headstock. I had to continue to contact them for continuing information, and had to argue to get compensation for the $125, which I never got. They negotiated to give me a G3 chuck, which I already had. Realizing finally that I wouldn't get the $125, I countered for a Titan chuck with an additional $50 to them. They okayed it, took my credit card number, and sent it. About two weeks later I got a bill for the $50, which a call confirmed that they had not inputted into the system. At that point they decided not to charge me the $50. The new headstock works well, but I won't be purchasing from them again. A quality company would have reimbused me shipping without question for a lathe that should never have left the factory - and it had a quality control certificate!

Comments about Nova DVR XP Lathe :

I had my lathe for about a year when a surge blew out the electronics. Nothing else in my shop was affected. I sent the parts to Teknatool in Tampa and they took care of me, repair under warranty at no charge. But, the process took a couple of months, so I'm buying a good surge protector before I plug it in again. I love the electronic control, find it easy to use, and the turning speed stays constant despite the resistance/pressure you place on it. I'd buy another.

Comments about Nova DVR XP Lathe :

This is a fabulous lathe. My only complaint is that the Manual is somewhat confusing in places. Assembly is very simple and they make it seem complicated. Despite what the illustrations show, you DO NOT have to remove the headstock for assembly. When I called Woodstock Tech Support to ask about this issue, the people were very nice but they had no clue. They referred me to the manufacturer who answered the question.

Comments about Nova DVR XP Lathe :

I bought this Nova DVR after using the Nova 16-24 (belt drive) for several years. I loved the 16-24 but was able to sell it for close to my original purchase price so I decided to upgrade to the DVR. I love the direct drive and variable speed capability. The direct drive provides an extremely smooth turning experience and the variable speed allows me to change speeds with a simple touch of a button. Personally, I would prefer a knob to change the speeds, but the button is okay. While changing the belt on the 16-24 was easy, it still required that I interrupt the turning process to change speeds. As a result, I would often "make do" with whatever speed the belt was set at. If you pay full price for this lathe you will have some choices at this price point. I looked at most of the major brands before choosing the Nova DVR. In the end, I decided on the Nova because of my previous experience with Nova lathes, the swivel head, direct drive and sale price. It doesn't come with legs or a stand so be prepared to purchase the cast iron legs or build your own stand. I built a stand with drawers and casters which provides the needed mass and is still portable. I highly recommend the Nova DVR. It's a great lathe.
