Comments about Forstner 24 Piece Bit Set :

The set is very complete, however, when it arrived the wooden box it comes in was cracked and the inside braces broken. I am using a slow speed on my lathe and yet I see a great deal of bluing after only a few uses on the 3/4 bit. I also bought two extensions as the smaller bits are too short to bore the projects I work on.

Comments about Forstner 24 Piece Bit Set :

I bought this set for two reasons. They reviewed pretty well in Fine Woodworking's test and it has a decent selection of bits up 3 in. Since the large bits get pricey this was a definite plus. Out of the box there were a couple of issues. First several of the bits are rusted where they were in contact with the case. This is mild surface rust and relatively easy to clean up. Slightly more annoying was the rust on some of the shanks where it was not in contact with the wood. It only affected 3 of the bits but it was mild pitting and I would say unacceptable for a new tool. One of the Forster bits also has an improperly cast head, not in a spot that should affect performance, but still. I've used a couple of the large bits (>2 in.) to hollow a 4" deep cocobolo vessel and a 8" deep maple vase. The bits did a pretty good job without burning which I would say was doubly impressive for the cocobolo. However, I used a 1/2 in. bit in a drill press to cut 6 holes in sapele and the bit already shows some burning. I can't be entirely sure if this is related to bit quality or due to wobble in my drill press. So bottom line, I could do without the rust, but they'll do the job. And considering the price and frequency with which a large bit is used it is probably a reasonable value. Just don't expect perfection. If you are mainly looking for a nice set of smaller bits, I would consider a better brand. Would I recommend it to a friend? Maybe, if they want to occasionally drill large holes, not if they want lots of nice small ones.

Comments about Forstner 24 Piece Bit Set :

The actual forstner bits appear good visually and a few test cuts were fine. It includes protective caps that include the bit sizing. I was particularly impressed that for the larger bits the shaft is sized for the drill chuck and then increases in diameter till the bit head. The display cardboard box holding the bits contained recommended speed settings for each bit and differing types of wood. I am very disappointed (sp?) about the storage box. At first it looked good, but the top and bottom separated from its sides. The wood is incredibly flimsy on top/bottom like 1/8 inch thick. Just rediculous and if this sounds trivial consider having 24 bits falling on your feet. There was also a strong chemical smell, I suspect the box glue or finish. The labelling on the box show these to the the woodriver brand.

Nice set of bits. They have worked very well for me. The big bits in the set need a slow rev drill.
