Product Information:

Claro walnut, western USA. "Claro" is a Spanish word meaning clear or bright, and the common name "claro walnut" is usually used to refer to the wood cut from the lower bole (stump) of orchard walnut trees, especially on the west coast of the US. These trees are a mixture of species, created by grafting an English walnut (juglans regia) scion to a rootstock of a native walnut species, either black walnut (juglans nigra) or California walnut (juglans hindsii). The wood near the graft tends to be variegated in color, with beautiful marble-like, dark brown and tan swirls in the figure. Working properties are similar to black walnut. Good strength and bending properties. It takes finishes well. Larger blocks are +- 1/4" of size listed, smaller blocks +- 1/8". Spindle stock (1-1/2" - 2") dimensions are +-1/8". Grain runs with the longest dimension.

  • Marble-like figure
  • Good for turning
  • Finishes well
  • Claro walnut turning blank, 4" x 8" x 8"

  • Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Thin Stock. The thin stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

Carving and Turning Blocks. Blocks are sawn to +/- ΒΌ" of size listed.

Plywood. Sizes are nominal. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

    Comments about Claro Walnut 4" x 8" x 8" :

Over the past three years I have bought 8 blanks of claro walnut blanks. But with out a doubt the larger the blank, the worse they are.I had one from two years ago that once I cleaned off the wax. with in days it cracked all over and warped so bad I could not use it.That was the figured blank (3x8x8)but it sure is pretty to look at. Seems like it takes forever to dry to the point where you are able to even cut into them with out warping!
