Product Information:

Claro Walnut 3"x3"x12"

Claro walnut, western USA. "Claro" is a Spanish word meaning clear or bright, and the common name "claro walnut" is usually used to refer to the wood cut from the lower bole (stump) of orchard walnut trees, especially on the west coast of the US. These trees are a mixture of species, created by grafting an English walnut (juglans regia) scion to a rootstock of a native walnut species, either black walnut (juglans nigra) or California walnut (juglans hindsii). The wood near the graft tends to be variegated in color, with beautiful marble-like, dark brown and tan swirls in the figure. Working properties are similar to black walnut. Good strength and bending properties. It takes finishes well. Larger blocks are +- 1/4" of size listed, smaller blocks +- 1/8". Spindle stock (1-1/2" - 2") dimensions are +-1/8". Grain runs with the longest dimension.

  • Marble-like figure
  • Good for turning
  • Finishes well
  • Claro walnut bowl blank, 3" x 3" x 12"

  • Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Thin Stock. The thin stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

Carving and Turning Blocks. Blocks are sawn to +/- ΒΌ" of size listed.

    Comments about Claro Walnut Turning Blanks 3" x 3" x 12" :

Claro walnut is a lighter weight walnut compared to American Black Walnut. That is the nature of this variety of Walnut, not a fault. All Walnut varieties have large pores. It does have great coloring and much more dramatic figure than most varieties of Walnut. An experienced woodworker can attain very dramatic results with this wood. Easy to work and finishes up beautifully.

    Comments about Claro Walnut Turning Blanks 3" x 3" x 12" :

I bought claro walnut bowl blank, it was nice and heavy, so I was suprised when I bought the peppermill blank. It was light, and huge poores, lighter than a cheep pice of pine. I was disapointed.
