Product Information:

(Dalbergia melanoxylon) Purplish black to dark brown with black streaks. Firm, heavy wood with exceptionally good working qualities. Cuts very smoothly and evenly, taking an excellent finish directly from the tool. Chief uses are musical instruments, ornamental inlays and turned objects such as chess pieces or pool cues. Rough sawn ±1/16".

  • The grain is mostly straight with a fine texture
  • Very nice to work
  • Very hard, dense, stable wood
  • Considered one of the best woods in the world for turning
  • A member of the Rosewood family

  • Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Thin Stock. The thin stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

Carving and Turning Blocks. Blocks are sawn to +/- ¼" of size listed.

Plywood. Sizes are nominal. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

    Comments about Blackwood, African 1.5" x 1.5" x 12" :

African Blackwood is an awsome product to work with and in my opinion is a lot more durable than Gaboon Ebony. I have used it to make a few Wallstreet 2 Pens and i was very satisfied with the results that i got. the only few things i can say about the wood that you need to be careful about, if you are turning it use a dust mask to keep from breathing in the powder like shavings, also turn the wood slowly to avoid overheating making it crack or shrink. probably the most important thing i learned from working with Black wood is that you need to keep your tools sharp when turning it and if you have to drill holes for pen blanks, use a sharp bit and take your time boring throught the wood , pull away from the hole often to let the wood cool that way no stress crack are created.

    Comments about Blackwood, African 1.5" x 1.5" x 12" :

This is beautiful wood, and great for turning. Just have good sharp tools. Hard to beat this wood for looks and durability. Its oily and protects itself to a point. Just add some renassiance wax to it and buff. Great stuff.
