Product Information:

Basswood (Tilia americana) is fine straight grain material with an even texture and little contrast between early and late wood. Europeans sometimes call it American lime because it bears some carving similarities to European lime (Tilia vulgaris). Basswood is an off-white, almost cream colored, tending towards very light brown. It holds carving detail very well and is easy to work. The wood has no characteristic odor or taste. It seldom warps after seasoning, making it close to ideal for larger pieces, as well as great for smaller carvings. Larger blocks are sawn to +/- 1/4" of size listed, smaller blocks +/- 1/8". Spindle stock (1-1/2" - 2") dimensions are +/- 1/8". Grain runs with the longest dimension. Canada and USA.

  • 2" x 6" x 18"
  • Straight grain
  • Great carving stock

  • Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.

Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.

Thin Stock. The thin stock is cut to size from quality, kiln-dried stock. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

Carving and Turning Blocks. Blocks are sawn to +/- ΒΌ" of size listed.

Plywood. Sizes are nominal. Dimensions are +/- 1/8" of size listed.

  • Wood for Carvers - There are many wood species that make for a good carving project, but some are more difficult to work than others.
  • Relief Carve a Whimsical House - I love to carve whimsical scenes in wood, but hate the time it takes to prepare a relief carving for the detail stage using traditional methods.

    Comments about Basswood 2" x 6" x 18" :

I bought a piece of 2" x 6" basswood. The swatch shown (and I found no copy stating other wise)led me to believe it was smooth surfaced, on arrival I found it was rough on the 6" faces meaning I have to plane it which will make the 2" thickness less than that. Bottom line...please let buyers know what kind of surfacing to expect so they can plan accordingly. Thanks.
