This HSS 1/2" bowl gouge will keep a sharpened edge about six times longer than carbon steel and resist "blued" softening from overheating during grinding or from heavy turning. Ash handles offer firm hand control during use and brass ferrules prevent wood splitting from tool pressure. Overall lengths 17" to 21".

Comments about Sorby Bowl Gouge 1/2" :

I am just learning to do a little bowl turning. I have a second-hand 3/8 Crown bowl gouge, but it had been reground to I was having trouble returning it to a condition that allowed me to make controllable cuts. I decided to eliminate this variable and invest in a new Sorby 1/2 with which I would follow along in the plethora of online demonstrations. After getting the gouge, I honed the edge with 400, 1000, and 4000 wetstones, tossed a knotty pine blank onto the mini lathe and cut it down to dust. This was an extremely satisfying experience - the techniques I have read about now work! Although I have less than an hour with this gouge, I can sincerely say that it will help me have fun learning to turn bowls rather wondering what I am doing wrong!
