BE AWARE !!
Taper Bit, 11/64", Fits #8 Screw
I went to my local Woodcrafters instead of purchasing online and I am so glad I did.
The taper bit marked for a #8 screw is about 3 times larger than the diameter of a #8. The salesman that helped me was a gem and he spent some time with me while we tried to figure out what was going on with the two products I saw advertised on the web site and wanted to buy, he was as perplexed as I was.
It was easy to see that the bit was way larger than a #8 but we went and got a #8 and laid it over the bit. If you used only the first 1/2" of the bit it would work fine, If you drilled for say a 2" screw, the screw would fall into the hole. The closest tapper bit in the store was for a #3 screw and it was still too large. I ended up buying some straight HSS bits.
I'm very disappointed in Woodcraft about this. It shows me they do not bother to check to if what their vendors say is true or not, they simple put the product on the shelf, and sell it to us.
I'm going to tell you about another product I went to buy. Countersink, 3/8", Fits #8 Screw Bit Item #06J34 - It fits the same taper bit I talked about above (wrong size).. BUT in the product information it says "The stop collars are also adjustable for varying counterbore depths and can be set just behind the countersink cutters when a counterbore is not necessary. - This is absolutely false. The collar and bore are all one piece, it is not capable of being adjusted.
Another example of Woodcraft not bothering to check their product before they sell it to us.
Sorry but here is yet another problem with this counter bore. I finally found a counterbore that 'looked' like it would fit the drill bits I bought. At this point I asked the salesman if he would open the bag so I could check to see if my bit would fit the counterbore.
He picked an Allen wrenches out of his bin and it wouldn't fit, so he picked another. Well after he'd poured out all the Allen wrenches in his bin we could not find one to fit! Evidently these counterbores only work with metric Allen wrenches, since he didn't have any we could not check for sure, but evidently if I want to use one of these counterbores that not only do not do as advertised, I need a special metric Allen wrench.
Well, needless to say I didn't buy either product but if I had ordered a few online I would have been one very upset customer when they arrived at my shop.
You know when we were looking at the tapper bit for the #8 screw we thought maybe there is a larger #8 screw? Haha, we even went and checked and of course a #8 is a #8, unless maybe your in China or somewhere I'm not.

This is real progress!
San Bernardino, CA
This tool is perfect for pre drilling in assembly situations. It works exactly as described, advancing pre drilling out of the "dark ages". This works so much better that anything that came before it.
I found an other use that makes it even more indispensable. When I attach studs to top or bottom plates I screw them. To avoid splitting, I always pre drill before "toe nailing" the screw. With any other type of drill bit you have to start drilling at 90 degrees to get the bit to dig in before changing to an acute angle. This bit is so pointy that you just set the drill at the angle you want and start drilling.
