A scraper is generally used after the majority of the wood has been removed with a rougher. A scraper is used to remove fine cuts of wood from a bowl or box on the lathe and the shape of the scraper determines its use. A round nose scraper has a curved end and is used for smoothing or blending surfaces. A side cut scraper is used to make a smooth transition from a side wall to a flat bottom. Heavy duty scrapers can clean up rough, irregular cuts left by gouges.
