Turning Salt & Pepper Shakers and Mills
I first decided to make bottle stoppers and everything I saw online was the same: bead and cove ad nauseam, a stack of geometric solids, or a place to put a college logo. This book showed me that form is all around us. I made bottle stoppers shaped like fruit, wine bottles, etc. Next I decided to make these pepper mills. The book is so inspirational on form that I can overlook its cons. I read the book cover to cover before using it and three things made me pause. First, the great majority of these plans use UK mechanisms and would require several changes to make my North American mechanisms work. Second, even though the diagrams are well drawn some of the measurements do not agree with each other and must be re-worked. Thirdly, his instructions were in a casual prose and not the kind of step-by-step recipe I am used to seeing. It's easy to see where editors removed whole sentences and left me hanging. But after making just one formless prototype it became clear that none of that mattered. The only measurement on the plans that made a difference to my hardware was length. The inspirations on form, technique, choice of materials, finishing ideas, etc. are what this book is all about. I love this book but only gave it four stars because it was full of trap doors for this American. I understand though…cookbooks from the UK have the same effect on me. If you have never made a mill I would suggest getting instruction on making a super simple mill first. Then read this book. The photos alone will make you drool.

Looking forward to start making Pepper grinders ans salt shaker sets
This book is well written and thoroughly researched with the beginner in mind but also for advanced wood turners. Chris West loves what he does and, has a remarkable way of putting his 30 plus years of experience, in this book. It is a book that even the non-wood turning person will find interesting with glorious photos of countless styles of mills and shakers, highlighting the many beautiful types of wood used in turning pepper and salt mills and shakers.
