      Comments about Rikon Planer/Jointer, Model 25-010 :

I'd say for a woodworker that is short on space, funds and power requirements, this is a good unit. I gave it 4 stars because I think it's a good unit in its class. This is not a 12"+ model with a spiral cutter head, cast iron tables, and a 3 HP motor. This is a Rikon with straight blades on 10" cast aluminum tables with a 1.5 HP motor. It is what it is. Compared to the smaller 8" and 10" Jet units this is miles ahead. Overall, much more rugged and powerful with an induction motor Vs. the Jet's universal.I picked this unit up at my local Woodcraft on sale for ~[$], which I think is a fair price for what I got. The current [$] price tag I think is a little on the high side for what this machine is. My biggest complaint with the machine is the use of cast aluminum tables. There's nothing wrong with them specifically, I would have just preferred the extra ruggedness of cast iron, but I knew that before I bought it. You need to be careful when torquing the bolts down on the aluminum outfeed table if you need to adjust it, it's easy to strip out the threads on the table.Dust collection while jointing is a joke, I'm still looking into how I can improve upon that. While planing it is much better, which is important for a decent finish. Switching between the two operations is relatively easy. First remove the fence, then raise the cutter guard, remove the outfeed table and flip the dust chute into place. Probably a 30 second operation and it helps if you have a dedicated place (such as a hook on the wall) to hold the outfeed table and fence while planing. Cut quality seems to be very good, requiring only minor sanding to make ready for finish. As with any jointer or planer you need to pay attention to the grain of the wood and correctly feed it the right direction to limit tear out.Directions aren't the greatest. As others have noted, Rikon must have switched manufacturing processes sometime after the manual was printed because the pictures do not match the actual unit at all. But I did not find that to be much of an issue. The planer measurement rule only measures in 1/8" increments and it cut off at the top, which is where you'll likely be reading for most pieces and can make it difficult to read. I'll probably replace that with a steel ruler that at least measures in 1/16" increments. Knives are double sided for longer service and the only place I've found to get replacements is direct from Rikon for $50/set. Setting the knives is no different than any other jointer and the outfeed table is adjusted with set screws. Time will tell how durable the cast aluminum is and how well it holds adjustment after switching between operations frequently.Overall I'd say I'm pleased with the unit and would recommend it to others that want a compact unit that does a good job milling lumber.
