WoodRiver Standard Block Hand Plane with Adjustable Mouth
Like the old Stanly 18. My old Stanley knuckle cap broke which I understand is common for that model. This one is beefier and and heavier. Maybe too heavy for a shop apron pocket but I really like the plane. Amazing how sharp it was out of the box - I popped a secondary bevel on it -back was flat already. Blade is holding edge well.

Premuim plane at bargin price
I had read that WoodRiver planes were pretty good and sinced this plane was on sell for $30 off I deceided to give it try. I found it to be a bargain even at full price. Tune up only required honing the blade which was lapped flat enough to use the "ruler trick" right out of box. I then added about a 3 degree secondary bevel and replaced the iron in the plane. The Knuckle Cap holds the iron securely and depth adjustment while not silky smooth works well. Lateral adjustment requires tapping the iron with a small cross peen hammer which is a non-issue to me. Mouth adjustment work very well. After getting everything straight and true I started producing true gossemer shavings and it took no longer than tuning my "premium planes". Gave it 4 stars because finish could be a little better but that doesn't affect functionality. Don't know about the bench planes but the WoodRiver block plane is a keeper.
My go to plane
Rochester Hills, MI
I bought this plane in 2007 and it has turned into my most used plane. The blade is thick and holds an edge well and adjusts easily. The adjustable mouth is very handy. It has a nice weight and feel, and more times than not, it is the plane I end up using.
Very well made. Blade is thicker than most block planes and holds an edge and micro bevel well. Feels good in your hand. Good tool!
Fine solid block plane for everyday use
I have had this plane about one month and have used it more then I thought I would. It has worked very well and excelled in all tasks I have put it to use at. It was pretty much ready to go right out of the box, but I suggest take 20 min – half hour and tune it up before first use.
I do not know how it compares to the premium brands, but for a solid well built block plane that you will use everyday this one is a good start.
