The 5" blade was fun to make, beautiful and worked like no other. Then my son was cutting onions and the blade snapped and went flying. Fortunately no one was hurt. I'm giving the larger size a second chance because it was fun to make. Hopefully, I will have better luck with the blade.

This is a great product, ceramic knives are wonderful but you do need to be aware of the shortcomings. Yes, it's brittle. It will also hold an edge for a year or more, and can be re-sharpened on a diamond stone. Don't try and cut curves with a wide blade, and don't try and stress this laterally as it's brittle. Also, don't drop it, as I can tell you from painful experience ;-p When you use it as intended, it's a highly effective tool that requires much less maintenance than steel knives. An easy quick gift project.

The edge on the knife is wonderfully sharp, but due to the knife's brittleness and flat sides, it's usefulness is limited. The flat knife sides "stick" to fruit and vegetables when slicing. The brittle edge chips easily. And finally, this particular blade has no strength if cutting anything but perfectly perpendicular to the object. Cutting around any curve will stress the blade sideways and quite possibly snap it. A good cutting edge, but for the price of the blade alone, a high quality METAL santoku knife is a much better bet.
