Product Information:

Whether you are a professional production turner or a hobbyist with limited shop time, these cryogenically treated tools stay sharp two to three times longer than standard M-2 high-speed steel tools so you are turning more and sharpening less! Manufactured in Sheffield exclusively for Woodcraft, these cryogenically treated turning tools offer many of the characteristics of powdered metal tools without the cost of powdered metal tools. The cryogenic treatment process uses sub-zero temperatures, down to -300 degrees F, to modify the micro-structure of the steel into a more uniform grain structure that allows you to hone to a fine edge without chipping. Also, your cutting edge is more durable and more resistant to wear. Each tool is mounted in a European ash handle. Overall tool lengths range from 17" to 23".

    Comments about Pinnacle Cryogenic Diamond Parting Tool 3/16 Inch :

    The tool dulls rapidly, but the steel is soft enough to easily sharpen. However, the corners of the tool round (instead of remaining crisp) so fast I need to re-grind after each use. That is, using the tool to cut a 6" bowl's base down to 3" means I cannot use waterstones to sharpen but, instead, have to employ a grindstone to return sharp corners.

    The diamond parting tool sharpens with little effort, but that is because the steel is soft enough to become dulled rapidly. While the product description talks about temperature altering the metal characterisitics, in reality the tool loses its edge quite rapidly. The good news is the steel is soft and easily sharpened.
