Great High End Plane with Reasonable Pri
Orange County, CA
Stanley SW No. 4 Smoothing Bench Plane
I bought this plane 1 year ago and used it regularly to smooth boxes, table tops, and countless other detailed woodworking and furniture projects. This is a great plane with a great value.
This plane has a nice heavy weight just enough to control with two firm grips. The plane surface is very smooth. Stanley polished the sole and the side to a semi-gloss finish. This is more than I could demand from my own preparation. The adjustment is very smooth. If you are used to the loose lashing on the old Stanley design, you may over extend the iron when you first tried this plane. It's that precise. The tilt mechanism is very easy to knock off adjusment but after 1 year of useage, it's not a problem anymore.
The iron blade is thick. Stanley had honed a micro angle into the blade. However, the iron cutting profile was still too straight. No problem, I just rehone the iron and put a slight curve fitting for a smoothing plane. I do this with all of my plane. I honed the iron to 1000 grit and polished it with 8000 grit. The iron stayed sharp for a long time.
I work mostly with cherry, alder, and walnut and the plane didn't need that much rehoning. Just a light coat of wax at the sole and the plane will run smoothly. When planing oak, I usually rehone the blade after a week of usage, just to be sure.
