Product Information:

The Koch System is the finest and fastest carving tool sharpening system in the world. Many sharpening systems claim to make the sharpening process faster and easier but the Koch delivers. This system was designed to eliminate time and frustration associated with sharpening and to this end, we’re continually amazed at how easy it is to use. The unique, "thermal-reactive" properties of the sharpening wheels and paste are what make the Koch Sharpening system different. Within a few seconds the heat generated by pressing the tool against the wheel turns the paste into a liquid that cools and sharpen at the same time. The resulting edge has no burr and there was no danger of bluing your tool’s cutting edge. A quick wipe to remove excess sharpening paste and you're back at work. From the smallest veiner to the largest gouge – putting an edge on a carving tool has never been easier! The Koch Sharpening System comes complete with four different colored wheels and two pastes: The red and yellow wheels are mounted on the outside arbor position and are designed to be used with curved tools like gouges. The green and blue wheels are mounted on the inside arbor position and are designed to be used with straight tools. The blue honing paste is formulated for use with the yellow and green wheels to produce a more honed or polished edge. The green sharpening/grinding paste is designed for use on the blue and red wheels and is used for more aggressive sharpening.

Comments about Koch Thermal Reactive Carving Tool Sharpener System :

Just a great tool. I have a solution for those having knife sharpening issues as well. Buy a blue and a green wheel, mount them on bolts and use loctite on the nut. Then mount a 1/2" chuck hand drill stationary and chuck the wheel up in the drill. You can just reverse the drill instead of flipping the knife to the other side, keeping the handle clear of the motor. My drill isn't quite as fast as the unit is, but it still works awesome, just takes a few seconds longer. I have my drill mounted on a piece of 3/4" ply and basically made a "cradle" that supports the motor and have the wheel basically off to the side of the base so it clears everything. The drill also has a round section just behind the chuck. I made a split block with a hole in it the size of the round section on the drill. I then ran bolts through the side of the split block and used it to clamp the drill in place. I have rubber feet on the ply so it doesn't move, but I can still clamp it down. Just be sure you make the plywood base tall enough so the wheel doesn't hit when it's spinning! If you have knife sharpening issues, this is really a great solution. It's not the best, but it does give me razor sharp knives! You could also use a motor and a belt drive polishing head with wheels mounted on that. Or, if you can find a reversing motor, mount a mandrel on it to attach a wheel. That's my plan when I ind a suitable reversible motor. Good luck, these are really great wheels and they are surely worth the trouble to mount them to work for knife sharpening!

Comments about Koch Thermal Reactive Carving Tool Sharpener System :

Every wood carver should get the Koch sharpening system. It is easy to use, fast and does an unbelievable job of sharpening my Pfeil woodcarving tools and chisels. I have also used it on my plane blades, Marpel chisels and it works great. The paste is easy to apply although a bit messy. A couple of minutes per tool and the edge is as sharp (or sharper) as new. I have several other sharpening "systems" but the Koch is by far the easiest, fastest, most effective. If anyone out there is like me, I didn't like sharpening but the Koch has changed that.

Comments about Koch Thermal Reactive Carving Tool Sharpener System :

Sharpens carving chisels to a razor edge. Very easy to use, machine base is quite heavy, and damps out any vibration. Quality is high as you would expect from a German made Machine. If I have one complaint it would be that it is difficult to sharpen carving knives on this machine. Totally satisfied.

Great sharpening system for V tools and gorges. Knives are a challenge to sharpen both sides. Instructions don't direct which color wheel to place where to review the website photos and video.

I purchased the wheels and mounted them on a longer shaft, to provide room for knives. The combination of the wheels and the compounds make this a superior sharpening system.

Comments about Koch Thermal Reactive Carving Tool Sharpener System :

I'm a serious wood carver. I spend a lot of time sharpening my tools. This machines changes everything. It's fast and it will change your definition of sharp. There are four wheels, two course. two fine. One for flat, one for round. I only use the course for changing the shape of my tool. It's very aggressive and frankly the fine side of the machine does everything I need. The unique thing about this machine is the compound, one blue for fine, one green for course. The compound melts on sharpening into a fine oil that keeps the tool cool and polishes the tool to a brilliant luster like nothing I've ever seen. When finished (after about ten to fifteen seconds) the tool is sharper than anything I've ever experienced. One criticism. Because the wheels are placed so closely together it can be impossible to get just the right placement on a knife blade. Chisels are absolutely no problem. Knives and other blades like planer blades are very difficult at best. The fine wheels can be placed on either side of the sharpener. So its easy to hone one side but when you turn the blade to hone the opposite side the handle of the knife prevents positioning for the correct angle. I'm thinking of different mounting strategies to over come this problem. To date I've been using the side of the wheel, which isn't great but ... but you got to do what you go to do to get sharp. Aside from this annoying design issue the machine is absolutely awesome. Three thumbs up.
