The traditional thinner for oil-based paints and varnishes, 100% Pure Gum Spirits of Turpentine acts as a solvent, flowing agent and drier. Many "old time" formulations for varnishes and wax polishes use turpentine as the solvent, and artists working with oils still prefer it as a thinner because of its superior flow characteristics.
