These oil-based Gel Topcoats and Stains are quite possibly the easiest of all finishes to use and achieve a "hand-rubbed" look without all the work. Application is easy with a foam brush or lint free cloth. The heavy bodied gel formulation permits the product to flow out evenly (no drips or runs) preventing uneven penetration for consistent color control. Combined with no sanding (your choice to sand or not) between coats and a quick “re-coat” time, you’ll be finished sooner with less effort and better results than ever before.

    This is the best gel stain on the market. Perfect consistency, spreads easily, and colors evenly. Wipe it on and wipe it off. It couldn't get much easier.

    I wanted a rich brown with red undertones when I refinished my ugly 80's golden oak cabinets so I layered the Brown Mahogany with the Georgian Cherry and got an incredible finish. If it doesn't get heavy use I don't think you'd need to put on a clear coat. If you do need the extra protection and want to keep the satin look, avoid the General Finishes wipe on satin as it will wind up too glossy, go with a water-based poly on top. If you like the shine, stick with the General finishes product since it is easy to use and leaves a nice professional finish.
