Product Information:

Because these mechanisms are ceramic, they will grind salt, pepper and spices. A bottom-mounted locking grind adjustment knob eliminates the need for an adjustment knob on top of the mill, and the snap-in fitting does not require the use of metal fasteners. This lack of restrictions opens up a whole new world of design possibilities for woodturners. Complete illustrated mounting instructions are included, both have a 25-year manufacturer's warranty. This mechanism is manufactured for traditionally designed mills. However, as a result of the bottom-mounted locking grind adjustment knob, a metal adjustment knob at the top of the mill is not required. This gives you the freedom to create new and innovative stopper designs. This mechanism can be mounted using the built-in "catchers" or glued in place. The top is fixed into the stopper, which can be removed to refill the mill. Mill height can range from 5 to 12 inches.

  • Ceramic mill design can be used with pepper, salt and spices
  • 25-year manufacturer's warranty
  • Unlimited design options
  • Wood or man-made material sold separately

Comments about Pepper Mill Shaft Mechanism :

Both my sons are getting married soon, and I turned this salt & peppermill set for the eldest. Happy with how these came out, I'm starting a set for the younger son now. I used the "trim & glue" method to assemble these rather than getting metric forsner bits and turning the internal grooves. Drilling, turning, and finishing were no problem, having to trim the plastic was a bit of a pain (but better than having to get metric bits and turn the internal groove, in my estimation). The trickiest part was my addition of the celtic knot decoration. The key to getting it to match up exact is to have the decorative insert be exactly the same width as the kerf you cut (in this case I did two blade widths on each band - the set for my younger son is using a single blade width kerf). Making these has been and enjoyable project.

Comments about Pepper Mill Shaft Mechanism :

The included instructions tell you to modify the grinder mechanism, removing the locking tabs so it can be glued in. I didn't do that, instead measuring all the critical elements then boring the diameters to size and length then cutting the locking tab grooves. You need to be aware that cutting the internal locking tab grooves will require a special tool. I ground my own, and there are now commercial versions available. Everything assembeld well and I didn't have to use glue. The first time I used the finished peppermill was a revelation - I had no idea what a good grinder could do. The result was a shower of perfectly ground pepper. I've since made several more mills and tried grinding sea salt with equally impressive results. As for the assembly method I use (also as per MFR instructions I found online) opposed to the included instructions to modify the grinder and glue it in I can't say which is best. Beginners would likely find it easier to modify and glue instead of dealing with an extra tool and cutting precise internal grooves. I think I should say using this mechanism in a project is definitely NOT for those just starting out. It requires quite a few advanced skills and an array of drill bits and turning tools. Overall, this is an excellent grinder mechanism.

Comments about Pepper Mill Shaft Mechanism :

I found it tricky to cut the grooves. I didn't use glue to hold the mechanism. The instructions could be a bit better, and more info on adjusting the grind mechanism to control ground pepper size would help. Fun to turn and I can only get better with the next one.

Comments about Pepper Mill Shaft Mechanism :

This is a quality item, but since I had never made a pepper mill, I was counting on the instructions to guide me and found them lacking clarity. I found written instructions and videos online that helped so I'm satisfied with the results. This kit would be much easier to use if the diameters matched common Forstner bit sizes. As it is, you have to drill undersized holes and then carefully enlarge the holes with a scraper or trim the pepper mill to fit.
