High-speed steel blades are hardened to Rc 62-64 and set in extra-long 16" hardwood handles with brass ferrules.     I first saw a B/P tool used by Scott Phillips on American Woodshop. As I've gotten more experienced with turning, I realized that I needed one of these, and I was right. BTW the sharpening opinion is well worth the money. I could perform surgery with my new tool.
