Comments about Jet VS Pro Wood Lathe, Model JWL-1442VSK :

A nice medium for those that want a lathe that doesn't wobble like the 1236, but don't want to fork out the money for the 1642. Turned out a couple of things already, including a baseball bat out of hickory for my Godson, no problems!

Comments about Jet VS Pro Wood Lathe, Model JWL-1442VSK :

I have been using the lathe for about two years I have had no problems it is a great machine However as my skill has improved so has time on the lathe increased, I have noted that I have to stop work after about an hour because the motor is so hot to the touch. My recomendation is buy the more powerful motor if you are going to do heavy work - the reason for the con remark is that I should have gotten the 2 hp to start with - I have contacted Jet to see if I can rewire or change it out as the name plate on my motor says 220v But over all a great machine One other comment on adding weight to the frame I just slow things down till the piece comes into balance

Comments about Jet VS Pro Wood Lathe, Model JWL-1442VSK :

I've probably got a couple hundred hours on this lathe, and I'm starting to find some of it's weaknesses. Don't get me wrong, I've been very pleased with the overall quality, but a few words of caution to avoid finding yourself in my situation. The first thing to break was the plastic knob on the speed adjustment handle. No big deal, I turned a new one. The Cam mechanism on the Tailstock broke when securing it, disassembly revealed a bad weld on a cast iron part. The lock nut on the headstock cam bolt actually stipped the cast iron stud it attaches to. None of the set screws on any of the components were machined with a flat bottom, and have all worked loose, required removal, grinding a new (flat) face and reassembly. And I've been noticing that the variable speed pulley system is really starting to make quite a bit of noise. Everything still works great, but I have a good mechanical background that allows me to fix my own machines. For someone that can't or doesn't want to, this particular lathe would have been in for repair at least 6 times by now. When buying another lathe I will certainly inspect to make sure that while the bed and legs are made of cast iron, the rest of the machine isn't!

Comments about Jet VS Pro Wood Lathe, Model JWL-1442VSK :

I am new to turning wood. My long time friend and excellent wood turner told me, "you can do little things on a big lathe but you can't do big things on a little lathe". I bought the 1442 and have been very happy. My friend is also impressed. I added 250# of weight on a shelf I built but did it on a "just in case" basis, not because I needed the extra weight. The Revees system has worked flawlessly. I would like to have a more powerful motor, but agin just because I might need it, not because I do. I believe that this lathe is a one time purchase for just about any woodturner of any skill level. Great value for the price though I got it durning the Jet sale back in the spring.
