Product Information:

Peg construction traditionally involves the difficult task of driving a pin dowel into a hole that is just as tight at the top as it is at the bottom. Not only do you have to use a hammer from the very beginning, but it only gets tougher as you get deeper. The Miller dowel is inserted 75% by hand because of the relationship of the dowel shape to its pilot hole. You get better holding strength, and it's easier to tap in. Another advantage of inserting the dowel through the top board is simply that there is less chance for the pilot hole to be misaligned. 1X dowels are 2-5/8" long and 3/8" at their largest diameter. Mini X dowels are 1-5/8" long and 1/4" at their largest diameter, ideal for joining 1/2" stock. 2X dowels are 3-3/8” long and 3/8” at their largest diameter. Kit includes a step bit and 50 dowels. Bits have reduced shanks to fit any 3/8" or larger chuck.

  • Simple - fast and easy to use
  • Strong - solid, longer lasting joints
  • Economical - minimal tools required
  • Versatile - use in any woodworking project
  • Unique - the only natural fastener designed for insertion from the outside

Comments about 1X Stepped Dowel Kit :

Putting together a cabinet that is over 125 years old. The screw holes were well worn out. Instead of using larger screws in very dry wood, I used the miller dowels. Wood did not split and thy hold better than screws.I am going back to Woodcraft to stock up on more.

Comments about 1X Stepped Dowel Kit :

The dowels were binding and not seating. I discovered that the top part of the dowels diameter was slightly larger than the hole made by the step drill tool. I had to sand each dowel by hand, not easy since the dowels are round, to make them fit properly. Perhaps, it had to do with dowel moisture content or poor tolerances. In either case it was disappointing.

Comments about 1X Stepped Dowel Kit :

I used the 1X dowels for the first time to strengthen butt joints in a rack that will hold 20 large umbrellas. They met that need, added a little "pegged" touch to the project, and were easy to use. Suggestions: (1)mark the depth you want to drill with masking tape on the bit to avoid having to to cut off a lot of the cap, (2)consider using a contrasting color dowel, (3)use a corded drill-plenty of power-check your alignment and slowly drill the hole, and (4)slow down for the last step in the bit and let it cut the surface to avoid tear out. Good product. I look forward to using it in future projects.
