Product Information:

Specifically designed for pen turning, these scaled-down High Speed Steel (HSS) tools are the perfect size for all your small turning projects. Tools are approximately 11" long with 8" handles, complete with wooden case.

High speed steel (often abbreviated HSS, sometimes HS) is a material usually used in the manufacture of machine tool bits and other cutters. It is often used in power saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel. At room temperature, in their generally recommended heat treatment, HSS grades generally display high hardness (above HRC60) and a high abrasion resistance (generally linked to tungsten content often used in HSS) compared to common carbon and tool steels.

    Bought these to go with a new mini lathe and have turned many pens and other small items with them. The gouge is the perfect size to rough almost anything in the small scale and the skew has proven quite solid. Aside form the initial cleanin of the edge from the factory. I've had to sharpen them only once (just the roughing gouge really) and it took an edge beautifully and easily. For the price this set can't be beat and the size is perfect for those intricate and small turns.

    I am a brand new woodturner and wanted some smaller tools of my own instead of "borrowing" my husband's. This set fit the bill. I have used it to turn several spurtles and will be using it to turn pens this fall. The handles have the right amount of weight to balance the tools; however, I think that I would prefer them a tad longer to further help with balance... maybe that is because I have used several of my husband's larger skews and gouges. I think that I'll be using this set of three tools well into the future.
