Good Vise, But it Needed Some Fixing
WoodRiver Pattern Maker's Vise
The vise is very well designed, and the build quality is good. However, there is one design/build defect that should be fixed. The bar that controls the vise elevation is connected to the vise using a "pin through hole" attachment. The hole in the bar is oversized allowing the whole vise to rattle to a small degree.
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
This vise is an incredible value for the money. It is a huge heavy cast iron vise that is precision manufactured. The vise screw is huge and the castings are fine. A very heavy vise weighing about 55-60 pounds. If you don't want to spend $1000 on a Emmert, this is a great buy. Woodcraft had the best price as well.
Wow what a vise!
Christian the perplexed
This thing is awesome. I'm still a bit perplexed by it so I can't tell you all the neat things it does. It certainly does more than I need it to right now...
Obviously (I hope), it's not a good fit for the fold-up workbench you take on a contract job. It's big. I would suggest some buffalo hide for the jaws.
Wow, what a vise . . .
Wow, what a vise! At over 50 pounds all by it-self, make sure your bench is wide and/or hefty enough to accept this rascal and if you can arrange for a helper on the day of installation, do so. Also make sure you have enough clear space below the vise so that the beam may swing freely. Keep in mind that these jaws are just shy of 14 inches in width, so if you don't want it over-hanging the corner of the bench, the center of the vise must be mounted about 7" off the corner. However, you must also allow ( have ) enough space ( 5" left of the center ) at the underside of the bench, so that you can mount one, but get at two levers / handles that lock the tilt and rotation capability. Once it's installed you'll find it to be a great asset to your shop and you'll wonder how you ever got along without it!
