    Comments about Planecraft :

Was recommended by a friend. Very happy I bought it and learn something new everytime I go through it. I suspect Record printed this as a brand manual, but knew they had to fill it with useful stuff to get others to buy it - and they did. I have only two "Record Tools", but love this book. I suspect if it isn't in here, it really isn't critical to know.

    Comments about Planecraft :

This book is very authoritative and informative, and is filled to the brim with knowledge that can otherwise seldom be found except through word of mouth or trial and error. The wording is mostly precise, occasionally awkward, and is filled to the brim with enthusiastic reviews of practically every Record brand Plane product available to the craftsman in the era during which it was written. This does not necessarily detract from its usefulness (although it can become irritating at times), because much of the information provided is applicable to modern versions of the planes discussed in the book. If you wish to work as a craftsman without need of an extensive power tool collection, or simply want to do things the old way, the know how that this book provides will allow you to use planes to accomplish many, perhaps all, of the activities that cabinet makers and finish carpenters rely on machines to do today. P.S. Of course power tools are much more efficient and work much faster than hand planes - I am not attempting to claim otherwise. I am merely presenting the fact that many/most of the same tasks can be more than adequately accomplished with hand planes.
