For hardwood, buy at least 10 more than you need because you will have to do some testing on scrap to get a feel for this. I am working with Bubinga and Grenadillo (Red Ebony) which are about as hard as it gets. Here's what you need to know as it applies to the 1/4 x 20TPI inserts. A 3/8" hole will not work. The insert will either break at the slot cutout and/or badly lift the surface grain. In a drill press, use a 13/32" brad point or start with a 3/8 brad point to drill the hole about 5/8" deep. Next, use a high quality countersink that can cut at least a 1/2" wide pocket hole. Using a drill press, countersink a beveled hole that is at least 1/2" wide and about 1/32" deep at the 1/2" diameter edge (close to top). Since I didn't have a 13/32" brad point, I had to drill the 3/8" hole to 13/32" with a conventional drill bit (in a drill press). Note, the disadvantage to a larger hole is that the insert will likely not go in straight with a hand tool. In a drill press, either mount a drill adapter made for slotted brass inserts or make one from ~2" of 1/4 x 20 threaded rod with two nuts to jam against the insert. Place the brass insert on the adapter and put a little mineral spirits in the hole and on the brass insert for lubrication. While pressing down hard on the drill press handle, turn the drill press chuck by HAND. Thread the insert just enough to get it started fairly well. Disconnect the piece from the drill adapter and finish by hand. Don't go any deeper than you need or the insert adapter allows. Note the emphasis on using a drill press. If your work cannot fit under a drill press, it will be harder to get a good result. For softwood you can probably get away with a 3/8 hole and a hand drill if you have good aim. I would still buy at least 10 more inserts than needed for some trial and error testing on scrap. Good luck.
