Comments about Rabbet Plane, Bullnose, No. 90 :

I worked for two years as an apprentice lapstrake wooden boatbuilder and this plane was absolutely indispensable for planing winding bevels on plank lands by eye. Once the iron is trued and honed, it holds an edge forever and the way the plane body fits the hand makes this tool a direct extension of one's instinctive feel for the proper freehand cut to make the next plank follow the section mold. Works fine for ordinary flatwork cleanup but it really shines as a general purpose block plane for narrow work. Try it on plywood-planking with a slight hollow grind on the iron bevel and you'll be amazed.

Comments about Rabbet Plane, Bullnose, No. 90 :

If you need a shoulder, chisel, rabbet plane and can't afford one of the top names, then this plane will work, if you're willing to spend a couple of hours or so, getting it to the point that it should have been out of the box. I think that Stanley is a little too proud of this plane, if my plane is indicative of the model norm. The price is rather high for what you get. This plane exhibits the lack of polish and pride of workmanship that I'd expect on a product costing $30 or $40, not over $100. I spent well over an hour, just getting the sole and sides reasonably flat. The blade is going to require much more attention than just sharpening, so I put it back in the meager cardboard box for another day. I think that the plane can be adjusted to the point where it's a decent shoulder, chisel plane, which is why I'm keeping it, rather than returning it to Woodcraft. I'm just rather disappointed at the rough condition that a new plane of this price point can be. I would only recommend this plane to someone that was willing to put in the work required to bring the plane up to where it should be.

Comments about Rabbet Plane, Bullnose, No. 90 :

The inside casting is very rough. Even the screws are so poorly machined that an undersized driver blade is required. Adjustment is very coarse. Inexpensive Chinese and Indian planes are superior to this product. It's one small step up from junk.

This is a great solid rabbet plane well worth the cost. I keep this on my bench for every cabinet build.
