I've been using more and more hot-hide glue in my projects. The reversibility of hide glue and its versatility have been very, very helpful to me as I teach myself more furniture building skills. The only down side for me is preparation time. But for that I keep around some liquid hide glue for quick jobs and fixes.

I use a candle warmer to extend working time. I don't wait 24 hours, as soon as the glue absorbs all the water (about 2 hours or so). I use a 1 to 1 volume mixture in a glass tea candle holder, then I start heating it. As soon as it gets to the consistancy of thick syrup I'm ready to glue. I missed gluing a chip once, I used boiling water and a hot knife and I had a lot of trouble because it wasn't a flat joint, but a rough break. Just quickly brush it on both sides and hold in place for a couple minutes and it'll grab, you don't need clamps. I use it to repair electric and acoustic guitars. Yes, neck joint and head repairs. No problems yet and I have NOT had any problems leaving my guitars in a hot car parked in the desert (Las Vegas). You can easily peel off the extra.

I rate myself as a fine woodworker that builds wooden musical instruments. Neither Personal or Business. Less than professional as I could not make a profit on the materials and hours I put in; but more than amateur. Hide glue, is mostly boiled cow bones, it is also very close to unflavored geletin that can be bought as a food suppliment. A Hide Glue joint will last a very long time (hundreds of years), it is somewhat self repairing and it is easy to un-glue with a razor knife and boiling water. Hide Glue also conducts sound well along joints and edges, making it good for wooden musical instruments. Down side is that the dry powder has to be mixed with water 24 hours before use, the mixed glue will not keep and any unused just as well be thrown away. The set-up and grab time, depends very much on shop tempt. It is easy to use on a wood instrument as small as a Mandolin Sound Board; but, is troublesome for something as large as a Guitar or Dulcimer Sound Board. Way to overcome problem is to use a larger brush for brushing the glue and have work in good jigs. Another down side is that Hide Glue is not water-proof; water will dis-solve Hide Glue, to make Hide Glue Water-Proof, mix it with a little Formaldehide. Hide Glue is the only way to go for wooden musical instruments.
