Swiss made implies reliability and precision. pfeil is undoubtedly the finest carving tool on the market and are second to none in terms of manufacturing quality and durability. For years our customers have requested bench chisels with the same high quality and craftsmanship as that found in our Swiss carving tools. We've pushed the issue with pfeil for over ten years until they finally gave in to our request. We are proud to finally offer the first Swiss made Bench Chisels from pfeil. Lacquer finished, contoured handles fit the hand nicely and feature a top ferrule to withstand heavy mallet blows. Blades are made of Swiss alloy tool steel and heat treated using the latest technology to produce excellent edge-holding characteristics. Cutting edges are finely ground and polished for easy resharpening. Chisels may require slight honing to suit personal preference, but our test set was razor-sharp, ready to go right out of the package. Overall lengths 10-1/4" to 11-1/4", blade lengths 4-3/4" to 5-3/4". 6-piece boxed set includes 6mm(1/4"), 10mm(3/8"), 12mm(1/2"), 16mm(5/8"), 19mm(3/4") and 26mm(1") chisels.

    I've come to learn that all hand tools should be viewed as "kits." That is to say, one should expect to spend time tweaking the tool for use. These chisels required some work to remove the machine marks and get a mirror finish on their backs. Properly sharpened, they're fine chisels. In time, I'll personalize them with turned ash handles.

    Nice and sharp out of the box. I found the backs flat enough, but it did take quite a while to polish the machining marks away. According to the Fine Woodworking review they are nearly as good as the Lie-Nielsen chisels, but substantially cheaper.

    These chisels were not anywhere close to flat out of the box. And the chisels had really deep machining marks on them. It took an excessive amount of time preparing the chisels.Now that I have the chisels flat and honed, they work fine. But I have a hard time spending [$] for a set of chisels only to find that each one required serious work to get ready.Unlike others, I like the handles. But even if you don't, it is easy enough to make a handle that you like.

    The chisels have a rough handle and need a lot of work to get deep machine marks off the back and faces. Have used them for about one month, and they seem to work well once I spent some time fine tuning them. These chisels are not ready out of the box, they will require some effort to get them into shape, but once you get them there, they work fine and seem to hold an edge. I have not hammered on them a lot yet, just paring by hand.

    After comparing these to the other people in my class that had the Lie Nielsen chisels I ended up returning them for a smaller set of Lie Nielsens. While the Pfiel chisels seemed ok, they just weren't up to the standard of the Lie Nielsens for about the same amount of money.

    I recieved this set as a christmas gift and overall I am happy with the quality of the product. To start with I should tell you, all of my chisels are polished to a mirror finish on the back and the bevel. However, I found the machining of the backs and bevels to be something less than expected from a Swiss made product. The backs of the chisels were not flat and the machining was, on some chisels very deep and required extra honing to remove. All that being said, I am happy with the chisels and would recomend them to anyone interested in a good utility set.
