Product Information:

Unlike Western man-made stones, water rather than oil is used on Japanese stones to prevent the surface from being clogged with metal particles. We offer two classes of stone: coarse and finishing. The coarse stones are 250, 800, 1000, and 1200 grit. The 250 and 800 grit are faster cutting and used for repairing nicked edges or reshaping a bevel. The 1000 or 1200 grit stones are used for the first stage of the actual sharpening. Japanese water stones are softer than Western styles causing a fresh, sharp surface to be continually exposed to the tool edge.

    This is a great item at a reasonable price. I believe it's synthetic and not authentic waterstone and that's why the price is lower, but it works great and you will hardly notice the difference. I have a bunch of old chisels and gouges, and I was able to restore them to their former glory. This combination stone worked great, and soon I'd like to add a finishing stone to replace the oilstone I have for final honing.

    This is an Ice Bear combo waterstone 250 and 1000 grits. I've used the 1000 grit stone and find it is fast cutting and large enough for my largest plane irons. The 250 grit side is for drastic stoning to take out nicks in the edge which I did not need as yet.
