Product Information:

Unlike Western man-made stones, water rather than oil is used on Japanese stones to prevent the surface from being clogged with metal particles. We offer two classes of stone: coarse and finishing. The coarse stones are 250, 800, 1000, and 1200 grit. The 250 and 800 grit are faster cutting and used for repairing nicked edges or reshaping a bevel. The 1000 or 1200 grit stones are used for the first stage of the actual sharpening. Japanese water stones are softer than Western styles causing a fresh, sharp surface to be continually exposed to the tool edge.

  • Use water rather than oil for sharpening.
  • Japanese water stones are softer than Western styles.

Good combination of grits. I hollow ground a new set of chisels, then sharpened them up on this combo stone. Razor sharp!

0.8K side - cut fast and doesn't load up (clog). A bit soft so it will dish, so flatten it often to avoid deviated edge. 4K side - produces pleasant cutting sounds and knife edge (toothy) easily slice through newspaper. Follow up with 8-10K stone or 2microns cbn/diamonds paste, 1u... Wanted dimension: 8x3x1 inches. Bottom line: I would buy again.

This is a joy to use after using oil stones, which were slow cutting in my experience. The need for soaking is a minor pain if you need to sharpen on the fly, but I can usually foresee when I'll be needing to.

    Comments about Combination Waterstone, 7-1/4" x 2-1/2" x 1" 800/4000 :

Avid woodworker for 30 years. I have several water stones and natural stones. I keep a mirror polished edge on all of my tools, sharpening a few of them every few days. I have found this one combination stone to be all I need. The 4000 grit side gives a finer edge than an 8000 grit stone by another manufacturer. For nicked edges, or ones that need the angle reestablished, I start with 120 grit sandpaper on a polished granite tile to establish a primary bevel. After getting a burr across the back of the edge I go to the 800 grit side of this Shinwa stone, which I keep flattened with the same sand paper. I hone the back flat, then I pull just a few strokes on the beveled side at a slightly steeper angle than I did with the sandpaper. Then I go to the 4000 grit side of the stone, doing the same for a few strokes on each side. Shaving hairs off the back of my hand confirms a razor sharp edge.

For someone wanting to try waterstone sharpening this is the stone to buy. The 800 grit side is course enough for all but chipped or abused edges and the 4000 side can provide a near mirror polish.
