Hold Fast Complete Vacuum Stabilization Chamber Kit
Having a need for stabilizing some special wood types, I did some looking around and went with this system after hearing some good reports about it.
I have found several issues with it and at this time, cannot recommend it to anyone needing to do serious stabilizing.
First, almost every fitting leaked and had to be removed and properly sealed with teflon tape to stop the various leaks.
Secondly, the gasket material is not a one piece item. The ends are glued together and leak badly. I tried three different gaskets and had the same issue with each. I bought some flat rubber material and cut my own gasket, which worked very well.
Third, Obtaining a vacuum much over 20" was very difficult and it could not be held using the supplied generator. I tried two different generators and had the same results. This was rectified by replacing the generator with a Vacuum pump and now get 29"+ consistently.
Using the supplied generator, I was never able to acquire much more than about 5% penetration/saturation of the wood after an 8 hour trial. With the Vacuum pump, I obtained very close to 95% in about 5 hours.
Last but not least, after finally getting a vacuum and no leaks, I applied vacuum to the 8 1/4 quart tank, sealed off the tank and allowed it to set overnight. In an 8 hour period, I lost only 1" of vacuum, but the 1/2" plexiglass lid was full of spider cracks in the center of it.
After talking to a pro that stabilizes all the time, I was told that he had also found the same problem with the lids cracking. HE recommended going to a minimum of 1" plexiglass, which I have now ordered.
My local Woodcraft has been OUTSTANDING in refunding my purchase costs and attempting to resolve these issues, but wanted to issue a fair warning to those looking at this system for serious work.
