Not worth the trouble
Brooklyn Tool and Craft Shellac Flakes Tiger Blonde 1/2 lb
I like shellac and have used it for sometime now. I have always bought Zinsser in can. This time I decided to purchase flakes, more shellac and maybe a better product at a better price. I did purchase the Klean Strip alcohol from a big box store. My first experience was the flakes did not dissolve very well, even after crushing them. I figured that since shellac has been used through the centuries, that I must be doing something wrong. I went onto the internet and found that not all denatured alcohol is created equal, so I purchased some Behlen alcohol, it is the purest alcohol available. After leaving the shellac flakes in the alcohol for about a week, shaking the jar frequently the flakes were only about 30% dissolved, the rest of the flakes were the consistency of gummy bears. The next thing I did was to try the kitchen blender, this worked pretty good, but it makes a mess. The Lord help me if my wife finds out about this part. So now, I finally have a quart of 1/2 lb cut of shellac, total cost is probably in the neighborhood of $35/qt. For me and my household I will save time and money and but the cans.
