Good steel, but back wasn't flat
Pinnacle Replacement Plane Blades for Veritas Bevel Up Jointer
This blade holds an edge well - it seems at least as good as my original Veritas blade, but I can't do a direct comparison since they're sharpened at different angles. The cryogenic treatment on this IBC blade is something that Veritas doesn't offer, and it supposedly increases durability, although the people at Veritas don't seem to think there's enough evidence to conclude that cryogenic treatment makes a difference.
There are a couple issues to note. First, the back of the blade was slightly convex. I could see that there was a polished section that didn't reach all the way across the back. I had to spend a lot of time (maybe 20-25 minutes) flattening it, in part because the metal is very hard. It wore out a sheet of 180 grit sandpaper which I had adhered to a piece of glass. At that point, it was flat almost all the way across the back and I didn't want to bother pulling off the sandpaper, scraping the glass clean, and sticking on a new sheet, so I just moved onto finer-grit stones and put a back bevel on the blade. I have one Veritas blade and one Lie-Nielsen blade, and for both of them, I was able to flatten the backs and polish them with an 8000-grit stone within 2 minutes. I didn't like that this one costs more than a Veritas blade and still required all that labor to get it in a usable state.
Also, this blade is slightly thicker than a Veritas blade, and so if you swap blades often (if, for example, you have multiple blades with different angles) it might require some extra fiddling with the lever cap screw and thumbscrew every time you change blades.
In summary, this is a good-quality blade, but be prepared to spend some time getting it in a working state. I give it three stars because, for the price, it shouldn't require that extra, tedious work.
