drill press laser
Drill Press Laser

Great Drill Press Addition
Installed easily on my Jet floor model drill press and looks like it was built in at the factory. Seems to be spot on accurate. Will have to see how well it performs over a longer period.
Peaks Island, ME
Easy to use and fantastic for aligning parts for accurate drilling.
Accurate once set up, seems light weight
New York, NY
It was not difficult to set up accurately using the included guide rod. It seems like the lenses and adjustable parts are light weight and flimsy. One of the two adjusting screws on the right lens won't screw in, but it seems the other is holding it's adjustment.
Once adjusted, I placed a very small X on a piece of scrap, lined it up, and clamped it down. Using a 1/16th bit, I hit the center of the X within a 64th. That is as good as needed for use on wood.
If it last, it is great.
Exactly what I wanted
Engineer with tools!! (!??!!)

This device attaches quickly and easily to the mast of the press. Initial adjustments, though necessarily meticulous, were thoroughly described in the mounting instructions. Take your time when mounting/adjusting this device. "Good enough" really isn't if you want to be able to raise or lower the press table. Set it, verify it, then verify it again. Laser lines are bright and continuous. About the only trouble I had with the install was finding a good 9V battery to use. (I ended up going out to buy one...)
If your press doesn't come with one of these, this one is nice to add.
Smaller is better
I use this laser on a Delta 20-950. The bigger your drill press is the narrower the intersecting angle of the laser cross hairs will be. The narrower the intersecting angle of the laser cross hairs is the more difficult it is to tell where to place your workpiece in relation to the cross hairs to get an accurately placed hole. I don't recommend this for use on a large drill press like the 20" Delta. The other problem with this unit is the thickness of the laser lines. This contributes to the difficulty of placing the workpiece correctly to get an accurate hole placement.

Worth the money
Long Island, New York
I've seen these before, but just recently purchased one for myself. The short version is it's only as accurate as the width of the laser lines, which for wood is pretty good.
For metal (I work with aluminum often) you should really be using a center punch anyway, so the laser simply lets you align things faster.
Setup isn't difficult, but make sure your table is perfectly square to the drill bit before you start. I did notice that the included alignment tool (which gets chucked into the drill press) certainly wasn't a precision instrument in itself, but it's certainly within the tolerances of the laser.
All in all, I would certainly recommend this item as it speeds up the setup process greatly, just don't rely on it for machine shop accuracy.
While the laser works well one of the set screws came stripped. Concerned that over the long haul precision may falter. Will see if I can fix it the next time I have to remove the laser to change the battery.
Performs as Promised
Installation instructions are good. Installation is easy and quick. A great addition for rapid and/or repeated operations with greater accuracy.

Takes a good bit of time for original setup, but well worth it. Saves a lot of time when using my drill press.
