Basswood (Tilia americana) is fine straight grain material with an even texture and little contrast between early and late wood. Europeans sometimes call it American lime because it bears some carving similarities to European lime (Tilia vulgaris). Basswood is an off-white, almost cream colored, tending towards very light brown. It holds carving detail very well and is easy to work. The wood has no characteristic odor or taste. It seldom warps after seasoning, making it close to ideal for larger pieces, as well as great for smaller carvings. Larger blocks are sawn to +/- 1/4" of size listed, smaller blocks +/- 1/8". Spindle stock (1-1/2" - 2") dimensions are +/- 1/8". Grain runs with the longest dimension. Canada and USA.2" x 4" x 12"Straight grainGreat carving stock
Due to the nature of wood movement, shrinkage and expansion are possible. Please measure each piece carefully before starting any project.
Wood is a product of nature, and as such, no two pieces are alike to start with, while the same wood growing in different locales can vary greatly even though it is the exact same species.
