Comments about Delta 13" Portable Thickness Planer, Model 22-590 :

I spent a lot of time reading online reviews of all the other planers in the less than $600 range, as I'm on a budget. All the other planers I read about had at least a few bad reviews, and the way they were written gave the impression the reviewer knew what they were talking about.I've been using the planer for a lot of Beech and some Walnut, and it has performed to my satisfaction. There are the occasional feed problems, but I have determined they were due either to feeding against the grain, dusty rollers, or taking too much off at a time. If you blow the shavings out after every use, and take a few seconds to just blow the rollers off (I don't take anything apart, just aim the air nozzle at the roller) then you should have no feeding issues, provided you aren't going against the grain or taking off too much.Setting the cutter head lock really helps to reduce board snipe. Another trick I've found that helps to pretty much eliminate snipe is feeding the boards in at an angle, which also helps to ensure even blade wear.I've used some industrial sized, stationary planers when I was in school, and even they experienced snipe and feed problems now and then, so in my experience these issues are impossible to get rid of, however this planer does a good job of reducing or eliminating the problems.[...]

Comments about Delta 13" Portable Thickness Planer, Model 22-590 :

Right out of the box this planer does a super job. I ran a 6 foot piece of poplar and did not support either end, the snipe was only on the out feed side and was just barely noticeable and only about 1 inch long. I was going to purchase it [...] but my local Wood Craft store matched the price [...] It is not as noise as I had figured it would be. I spent 2 months looking at reviews on-line; the $200 to $400 units just aren't worth spending the money on, this unit was more then I wanted to spend but the next one's up was either a Dewalt or Steel City unit for over $600.00
