Product Information:

With a maximum distance between centers of 16-1/2" you can turn objects as long as a chair leg or as short as a thimble. With the bed extension attached, you can turn bed posts, stair spindles, baseball bats and much more. You can also achieve a superior finish with the forward and reversing function of the Delta 46-460 Midi Lathe. Sanding a turned piece with the grain causes the wood fibers to lay down and remain rough. Sanding a turned piece against the grain will cut the wood fibers smooth. Rotating the turned piece in both directions is the way to achieve this super smooth finish. Other model lathes require you to remount the workpiece backward to achieve this dual rotation. This is time consuming and often impossible. With the Delta 46-460 it is a simple flip of the switch.

  • Powerful 1 HP Max, 1,725 RPM motor

  • Large 12-1/2" swing capacity provides the largest capacity in its class

  • Best-in-class speed range from 250-4,000 RPM giving the slowest low end speed in its class for large turning and fast high end speed for small turnings

  • Patented belt tensioning system for easy and quick speed changes and sets the belt at the correct tension every time for maximum power transfer and longer tool life

  • Indexing pin to lock the head stock spindle in 24 different locations for fluting and other decorative applications

  • All cast-iron construction provides stability and is extremely durable

  • Over headstock On/Off switch provides easy in-use access

  • Ball-bearing live center

  • Heavy-duty, steel knockout bar

  • Electronic Variable Speed with 3 pulley speed ranges provide the required speeds needed to turn a project without changing belt position

  • 6 Groove belt provides superior power to turn large objects

  • Large up front belt access allows the user to easily change speeds

  • On board storage for easy access to adjustment tools

  • 6" and 10" Tool Rests provides tool support in a variety of turning applications.

Comments about DELTA Variable-Speed Midi Lathe, 12-1/2", Model 46-460 :

I bought this lathe to turn tool handles, accessories, pens and other products. I had the chance to test drive the same model lathe in their shop before I bought it. I won't buy any machine that I can't to put my hands on. I have been disappointed in the past when I bought machines out of catalog. Pros: Fit and finish is great. No rough castings, no flaking paint, metal parts are well finished. Face plate is massive for a midi lathe and chrome plated. I like the hole for the knock out rod in the head stock to hold the spindle when I attach a face plate or chuck. This saves a lot of stress and strain on the indexing pin. 1hp motor delivers plenty of power and is very quiet. Has no problem turning an 8" dry "pecancrete" bowl. No stalls! Variable speed and reverse work smoothly. Access doors for belt changes are large enough for my big hands and fingers. The power switch is on top and easy to find making it much safer than my old lathe that has the switch on the back of the lathe. The lathe was well packaged and took less than 10 mins to setup. My wife likes turning on this lathe! Cons: The live center for the tail stock could be a bit tighter. I replaced it with a Woodcraft 60 degree Live Center. Much Better Indexing is a bit loose. I replaced the knock out rod with one of my own. The plastic handle cracked after I used it with mallet a couple times. The wrench for the face plate could fit tighter. I replaced it with one of my own that fits better. Bottom Line: This lathe is doing everything I want it to do and then some. I am delighted with the quality of service that the local Woodcraft store offered when I bought this lathe.

Comments about DELTA Variable-Speed Midi Lathe, 12-1/2", Model 46-460 :

This is a great solid midi lathe. With some help/instruction, I have turned all kinds of spindles, goblets, and some bowls up to 10". With variable speed, 1hp, and reversable motor, I can do everything on this lathe that I could do on the $6000 Oneway. Yes, a Oneway or Nova DVR will get you there in style, but at a much higher price. Now to address the vibration issue, of which I have none. I bought this lathe primarily because I am new to woodturning and the rave reviews from both novis and pro. Only a couple gave it 4 stars and not 5 because they fealt a little vibration, and those were not from pros. Mount it to a heavy and solid platform, level everything, and you have done all you can to stop vibration. Do not confuse harmonic vibration with a bad mounting setup. I you need a Oneway, Nova, or Powermatic, and have the money, "buy" all means get it. This Delta lathe is solid, economical and reliable. The 3 most important things in woodturning money cannot necessarily buy. Safety, a solid heavy platform for mounting the lathe, and sharp tools.

This is a great tool and machine to work with, it is very easy to use, and change the belts around on for the speed change. The electronic control for speed variation is great and works very well. I love this machine and would recomend it to any one, Delta did a very nice job. It has plenty of weight to it as well.

Comments about DELTA Variable-Speed Midi Lathe, 12-1/2", Model 46-460 :

I've used several different size and brand lathes in the mini and midi range. This one is by far the best. I have turned bowls up to 12" in diameter on this lathe. It has plenty of power, and since it is bolted down to my bench, is very sturdy and stable. I HIGHLY recommend this lathe. I cannot say enough good things about it. You will not be disappointed!

I've used this lathe to turn several small to medium sized projects in the two weeks I've owned it. Even without being bolted down, it is stable. I'm waiting for the stand to arrive and then I'll feel much safer. Since it runs in revers, sanding in both directions eliminates the rough spots I used to have with my ShopSmith turnings. I love this tool!

Had this for about 3 months now. Love it. Spend most of my time trying to get things ready to be able to use it. Has performed for me without any problems. If I had to nit pick one thing, I have had the belt slip a few times. But this was only do to my lack of attention to sharp tools. Have lots of plans in the future for this machine. looking forward to retirement. (in about 27yrs.)If your thinking about adding this to your shop, Do yourself a favor and DO IT. You won't be sorry.

I have been using a hand-me-down lathe from my grandfather for a while and this is quite a step up. The quick change belt is so great, I dont know how I ever did without it before. Everything is solid and well thought out. I just cant say enough, and I am very pleased with this purchase.
