Comments about JET 12" Variable Speed Wood Lathe Model JWL-1236 :

I bought this to turn RenShape polyurethane prototypes. I'm a metalsmith by trade and this is my first wood lathe. It was easy to assemble and it runs smoothly. I added a heavy shelf to the bottom and bolted it to the floor; it's stable and solid. I purchased based on the recommendation of a studio-mate who is a wood turner, and I am happy with it. I wouldn't say it's a precision machine, but it is a good value, and for prototyping purposes it gets the job done.

This is a great lathe for the money. I have read other reviews of the unit not having enough power. No problem on my end. I would recommend this lathe with no issues to mention.

Comments about JET 12" Variable Speed Wood Lathe Model JWL-1236 :

I bought this used, and have made numerous bowls with it. It is smooth-running and quiet. Hasn't broken yet! I'd like to see a somewhat slower minimum speed, and more detents between those present. I understand that it's possible to take off the cover and modify it for just this purpose. Not sure I'd do this if I bought it new, though. Also, there's no handwheel, so the only way to remove a chuck is to insert a peg into the indexing hole. I'd have to say that the 3/4 hp motor is a bit underpowered for a 12" diameter over the bed (and up to 16" with powerhead rotation, although I haven't turned anything over 11" yet). But with sharp tools and care, it's easy to get beautiful work. Overall, I'm really happy with this lathe.
